2007 - In Review and Celebration

Membership Services - Creating a Dynamic Network

  • The 2nd National Native Philanthropy Institute in conjunction with the Emerging Leaders Summit was held at Ft McDowell Yavapai Reservation, Scottdale, AZ in April 2007. This premiere networking, sharing and skill-building event gathering over 200 participants from across the nation. The Emerging Leaders Summit was inspirational and challenged NAP and members to join together is seeking and supporting our leaders for tomorrow as national builders and professionals in the philanthropic sectors. The following 2 days of workshops, plenaries and celebration fostered sharing of innovative ideas, resources and support for leadership at all levels of organizational growth while grounding us in cultural values.
  • Two regional convenings were held in 2007 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Both well attended events brought together local Native professionals, non-profits, tribal representatives and foundation executives. We sought feedback about NAP's goals, listened to your priorities and continue to expand the network to increase resources to Indian causes and concerns.

Leadership Development -- Building Leadership for a Vibrant Future

Following the successful launch in late 2005 of the Circle of Leadership program in the Midwest region, nine individuals graduated at the close of the Leaders Summit held at the Native Philanthropy National Gathering. The graduates of the Circle of Leadership shared their learnings by assisting in developing and implementing the agenda for the Leaders Summit. NAP continues to impact the field by sharing resources and learning opportunities with similar leadership projects managed by our members. We continue to grow this collaboration with Native non-profit leadership programs currently operating across Indian Country and in philanthropy.

Partnerships - Advancing Investment in Native Communities

Active partnerships are underway with Casey Family Programs and Philanthropy Northwest as NAP engages in deeper conversations with funders in the northwest and builds relationships to increase resources and strengthen leadership.

NAP continues its partnerships with the Joint Affinity Groups of the Council on Foundations as we grow and assert our focus as "Change Action Partners". We are engaged with projects such as "Common Vision" sponsored in part by Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, as a strategy building format to develop opportunities for funding intersectionality and diversity at deeper levels.

"Building a Shared Understanding" is the summary document from a study done by NAP in partnership with Minnesota funders and Native nonprofits to gain greater understanding of the priorities of Native communities, resources being provided and the gaps and misalignment to these priorities. NAP will convene partners and support next steps as championed by the local communities and foundations.

Linking Tribes, Native Non-profits and Donors

  • Website expansion continues as a priority with the launch of a new home page and addition of the 'Tools' resource for use by Tribes, Foundation, Nonprofits and Leadership Programs. We build upon and encourage sharing of information, exchanging links and expanding networks.
  • A new Membership Directory was launched to share deeper levels of information between NAP members with plans for expanded versions in future years.
  • The Louis T. Delgado Distinquished Grantmaker Award was presented to Lucille Echohawk and the Flying Eagle Woman Award was presented to Helen Waukazoo at the Native Philanthropy Institute.
