OVERNIGHT IMMERSION SESSION:
Shared Experiences and Common Goals in Colorado: Partnering with Philanthropy to Chart New Paths to Justice and Lasting Change

Tuesday, April 27 –Wednesday, April 28

Bus Departure: Hyatt Regency, 2:00pm April 27

Please arrive 30-60 minutes before departure.

On behalf of Native Americans in Philanthropy and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy we are excited to be leading a site session that takes full advantage of the annual conference’s locale in the Colorado West, the site session experience works to  bring full life the shared experiences of Native American and Asian American communities in this region.

NAP/AAPIP will provide a day and a half immersion session visiting three sites in Southeast Colorado:
Koshare Indian Museum, a museum dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of Southwest and Plains tribal art and artifacts;

Amache Internment Center, one of 10 concentration camps where over 10,00 Americans of Japanese ancestry were imprisoned, and is a mere 30 miles from the second location, and

Sand Creek, site of the Sand Creek Massacre, one of the most violent conflicts between government militia and Native Americans on historical record.

The session will highlight both the hard history of forced relocation that these communities share in common, and more importantly the enduring promise that philanthropy can make in terms of lasting, positive impact on these and all communities as they grow in the future.
A shared history and narrative of forced relocation and isolation that continues even today as evidenced in the treatment of communities in the wake of disasters such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina.  Philanthropy has many opportunities to impact and to model how society responds in such times of crises.  The session represents a critical and important leadership role for the Council, in raising awareness  to communities across a spectrum of interests the Council’s mindfulness that place matters. Every member of the philanthropic sector can share this context and history; Colorado is a perfect illustration of this crossroad.

And finally, we would like to provide you with logistical information and a few reminders so you can feel as prepared and comfortable as possible throughout the entire overnight site session.

TRAVEL TIPS AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Weather Conditions–  The weather should be comfortable in Southeast, Colorado in April but it can be unpredictable so please check the weather forecast before packing.  The forecast states the temperature can range from low 30’s to high 70’s during the day. Because Denver is closer to the sun, it can feel much warmer than the actual temperature during the daytime, but then become very chilly after sundown, particularly in the Spring and Fall. It is best to layer your clothing.

·
Altitude: The air is thinner and dryer in Colorado and it affects everyone differently.  We have provided some helpful hints.

·
Drink waterWe will be providing enough water for everyone throughout the trip but it is recommended that both before your trip to Colorado, and while you are here. Drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust easily to our higher altitude. The low humidity in Colorado keeps the air dry, like the desert, so you need about twice as much water here as you would drink at home. It is also recommended that you go easy on the alcohol in the mountains and in Denver, as its effects will feel stronger here. The effects of exercise are more intense here as well. If you normally run 10 miles a day at home, you might try 6 miles in Denver.

·
Eat foods high in potassium, such as; broccoli, bananas, avocado, cantaloupe, celery, greens, bran, chocolate, granola, dates, dried fruit, potatoes, tomatoes.

·
What to bring: There is 25% less protection from the sun's rays in some parts of Colorado.

·
Casual Attire:  It is recommended you dress comfortably and appropriately.   Please wear comfortable walking shoes that can handle unpaved and uneven sometimes rocky paths and some bush.  We strongly recommend closed toe shoes and clothing that offers some protection from the elements.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the logistics of the site session, please feel free to contact Priscilla Lee at 415-263-9969 or email her at
priscilla@aapip.org and if you have questions regarding the program please call Cynthia Choi at 213-268-0190 or email her at cynthia@aapip.org.

Sincerely,
