ONLINE REGISTRATION CLOSES 4/23; AFTER 4/23 REGISTER AT NAP BOOTH AT COUNCIL ON FOUNDATIONS CONFERENCE. OVERNIGHT IMMERSION SESSION: Bus Departure: Hyatt Regency, 2:00pm April 27 Please arrive 30-60 minutes before departure.
Sand Creek, site of the Sand Creek Massacre, one of the most violent conflicts between government militia and Native Americans on historical record.
The session will highlight both the hard history of forced relocation that these communities share in common, and more importantly the enduring promise that philanthropy can make in terms of lasting, positive impact on these and all communities as they grow in the future. A shared history and narrative of forced relocation and isolation that continues even today as evidenced in the treatment of communities in the wake of disasters such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Philanthropy has many opportunities to impact and to model how society responds in such times of crises. The session represents a critical and important leadership role for the Council, in raising awareness to communities across a spectrum of interests the Council’s mindfulness that place matters. Every member of the philanthropic sector can share this context and history; Colorado is a perfect illustration of this crossroad. And finally, we would like to provide you with logistical information and a few reminders so you can feel as prepared and comfortable as possible throughout the entire overnight site session. VERY IMPORTANT EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION -Please complete an emergency contact information and return to priscilla@aapip.org
· Altitude: The air is thinner and dryer in Colorado and it affects everyone differently. We have provided some helpful hints. · Drink water –We will be providing enough water for everyone throughout the trip but it is recommended that both before your trip to Colorado, and while you are here. Drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust easily to our higher altitude. The low humidity in Colorado keeps the air dry, like the desert, so you need about twice as much water here as you would drink at home. It is also recommended that you go easy on the alcohol in the mountains and in Denver, as its effects will feel stronger here. The effects of exercise are more intense here as well. If you normally run 10 miles a day at home, you might try 6 miles in Denver. · Eat foods high in potassium, such as; broccoli, bananas, avocado, cantaloupe, celery, greens, bran, chocolate, granola, dates, dried fruit, potatoes, tomatoes. · What to bring: There is 25% less protection from the sun's rays in some parts of Colorado. · Casual Attire: It is recommended you dress comfortably and appropriately. Please wear comfortable walking shoes that can handle unpaved and uneven sometimes rocky paths and some bush. We strongly recommend closed toe shoes and clothing that offers some protection from the elements. As always, if you have any questions regarding the logistics of the site session, please feel free to contact Priscilla Lee at 415-263-9969 or email her at priscilla@aapip.org and if you have questions regarding the program please call Cynthia Choi at 213-268-0190 or email her at cynthia@aapip.org.
