A special discussion will be held to learn how Native American tribes and organizations in Oklahoma can use formal philanthropy to support sustainable projects in their communities. The gathering will feature successful examples across Indian Country, time for sharing and updates, and next steps in creating an ongoing learning network. The meeting agenda is available here. While Native Americans have used informal giving to take care of family needs for generations, “philanthropy” today can encompass nonprofit fundraising, foundation grants, structured volunteerism, and more. The nonprofit sector is a critical source of knowledge and resources necessary for innovative programs. An increasing number of Native tribes and organizations are turning to formal philanthropy for economic resources and an increasing number of Native groups are taking steps to maximize nonprofit resources to more effectively serve their people and their communities. This gathering will be co-hosted by the Cherokee Nation Education Corporation and Native Americans in Philanthropy, but the day is really about our common interests in developing healthy, productive programs will build strong Native communities.
The deadline for RSVPs is February 19. Also, please take a moment to reply to the three questions listed below. Responses can be sent to David Cournoyer at dcournoyer@nativephilanthropy.org
