According to the IRS, more than 30,000 Foundations have been created in the U.S. and its territories since 2000.  As of March 2009, these foundations had total assets of more than $75.9 billion.  The majority of these foundations are family foundations, who give more like individual donors than structured foundations.  The number of ew foundations is the clearest evidence that while philanthropy is taking a hit along with the rest of the economy, a robust network of donors exists throughout the country.  Now is the time to understand and  cultivate individual donors, who increasingly seek impact and collaboration in addresing community needs.  New foundations are the window into the world of community-based individual giving - which comprises about 77% of private support for the nonprofit sector.  When the economy and confidence returns, it is this network, already committed to giving back, who will lead the way.
