The Truth and Healing Movement

A Challenge and Invitation to Pledge

The Truth and Healing Movement

The Truth and Healing Movement is a core part of the next phase of our Movement of Movements work, and centers on an educational and transformational exercise called The Blanket Exercise, a “unique, participatory history lesson – developed in collaboration with Indigenous elders, knowledge keepers and educators – that fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.” Over the next year, Native Americans in Philanthropy will also lead Regional Convening, Healing Circles, Racial Healing Dinners and Cultural Learning Tours for Native people and non-Natives who wish to join and support the healing work across Indian Country and in mainstream society.

It is our hope that you and your organization will join us in this very important work to acknowledge and lift up the truth related to Indigenous history and present-day stories of resilience, as well as partnering with us to expose the incredible work of healing that is already happening and commit to seeking ways in which to support all of our healing efforts moving forward, both for Native peoples and non-Native peoples.

The Purpose of the Pledge

We wish to gain and/or strengthen ally support, allies that also with to move towards equity and ending disparity and racism. We believe this can best be accomplished when allies begin supporting tribal populations through an ongoing education process and through both individual and collective actions.

The first action would be taking the pledge here!  Pledge to continued learning and to hosting The Blanket Exercise for your organization’s teams!

The Pledge

We commit to learning to American history related to Native American peoples which includes: genocide, forced assimilation, marginalization and ways to bring healing and reconciliation to our nation.

We pledge to have an experiential learning experience through The Blanket Exercise with a follow-up Healing Circle.

The Blanket Exercise is a teaching tool that uses participatory education to raise awareness of a history of the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples that most people never learn. The exercise is designed to deepen understanding of the denial of Indigenous peoples’ nationhood and human rights since the first contact originating in the Doctrine of Discovery in 1493 and continuously institutionalized in the most fundamental laws, policies and programs of nation building. This exercise is a way to open, or continue, the conversation about decolonization.

We commit to allyship and ally building by inclusion of Native American perspectives and involvement in our work and opportunities

We will participate in follow-up as a way to document the Truth and Healing Movement journey, which may include sharing pictures, feedback, and learnings.
