Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP) envisions a future with healthy and sustainable Native communities supported by responsive philanthropy. About the Position

Native Americans in Philanthropy seeks an experienced and passionate Oceans & Marine Stewardship Project Manager to lead and manage projects focused on marine stewardship and conservation within Native communities. This role requires a strategic thinker with expertise in environmental stewardship and a deep respect for Native cultures.

 

The Project Manager will play a critical role in preserving and restoring marine ecosystems, ensuring initiatives are successful, culturally relevant, and sustainable. This position will actively manage projects, deadlines, and grant deliverables. The position will ensure that these projects are grounded in Indigenous knowledge and align with NAP's broader mission to promote a healthy future for Native communities.

The ideal candidate will be growth-oriented and committed to integrating environmental justice and equity concepts into policy solutions.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Project Management and Strategy

  1. Develop, implement, and monitor project schedules, objectives, and deliverables to ensure the successful execution of marine stewardship initiatives.
  2. Lead NAP’s Ocean and Marine Stewardship initiatives through strategic planning and development, program administration, and program growth.
  3. Integrate Indigenous knowledge and stewardship practices into the development and execution of marine conservation projects to ensure cultural relevance and alignment with Native values.
  4. Prep programmatic and policy trends for participation in meetings with philanthropic partners.
  5. Work with the development team to coordinate funding opportunities and manage grant proposals.
  6. Manage program budgets and review program expenses regularly.

 

Collaboration & Partnerships

  1. Foster partnerships with Tribal nations, environmental agencies, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance project outcomes and secure funding opportunities.
  2. Collaborate with key local, state, and national partners on educational opportunities, materials, and events.
  3. Expand partnerships with federal agencies and offices with a focus on marine resources, ocean biodiversity, or offshore energy.
  4. Foster collaboration among Tribal leaders, Indigenous communities, environmental organizations, and government bodies on coastal policy topics that honor Tribal Ocean sovereignty.

 

Policy Analysis, Research, and Communication

  1. Track and analyze ocean and justice legislative trends and share updates with partners and key allies.

 

Non-Essential Job Functions 

  1. Coordinate working groups around ocean stewardship and justice topics.
  2. Work with partner organizations to plan local events such as site tours related to program work.
  3. Other related duties as assigned. 

 

Knowledge, Skill & Ability 

  1. Strong knowledge of project management software tools and CRM systems, such as Salesforce.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, particularly relating to environmental practices and resource management, with a focus on ocean stewardship.
  3. Strong leadership and diplomacy skills with a demonstrated ability to drive results and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  4. Familiarity with federal government and Tribal nations' processes related to environmental conservation and stewardship.
  5. Exceptional verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with diverse groups.
  6. Strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  7. Excellent time management skills with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and achieving project objectives.
  8. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other related software, including Zoom and project management tools.

 

Physical Requirements 

  1. Must be able to travel for up to 35% of the time for work.
  2. Must be able to lead Zoom and other video conference calls and use computer equipment. 

 

Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in project management, Environmental Science, or a related field, plus at least five years of experience in project management, preferably in conservation, environmental, or nonprofit sectors. Relevant work experience project managing activities relevant to ocean conservation, restoration, and food sovereignty, may be substituted for the academic requirements. 
  2. Must have experience in ocean conservation efforts or other habitat restoration projects, with a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous approaches to environmental stewardship.
  3. Strong commitment to advancing equity, Indigenous rights, and community-driven solutions.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
