Native Americans in Philanthropy is dedicated to increasing and nurturing Indigenous representation in the philanthropic sector. With that in mind, the opportunities on our Job Board fit one of the following criteria:    

  1. The position is within a philanthropic or nonprofit organization 
  2. The position itself is philanthropic in nature and/or focuses on roles essential to or valued by the philanthropic sector i.e. fundraising, grantmaking, gift processing or development, donor relations, nonprofit management and/or administration, social justice, equity, conservation, etc.

Indian Law Attorney

Job Details

Position Overview

Echo Hawk & Olsen seeks an attorney to join its Indian law practice. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience representing Tribal governments or Tribal entities and a strong commitment to advancing Tribal sovereignty.

While a Native attorney is preferred, all qualified candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide legal counsel to Tribal governments, Tribal enterprises, and inter-Tribal and Native owned organizations
  2. Draft and review Tribal laws, ordinances, policies, and governance documents
  3. Advise on economic development projects, business transactions, contracts and regulatory matters
  4. Represent clients in negotiations, administrative proceedings, and litigation as needed
  5. Support Tribal sovereignty initiatives and intergovernmental matters
  6. Work collaboratively with Tribal leadership, boards, and staff

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  2. Active membership in at least one state bar
  3. At least 2 years of experience representing Tribal governments, Tribal entities, or working in Federal Indian law
  4. Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  5. Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects
  6. Willingness to travel to Tribal communities as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Native American or Alaska Native heritage (preferred but not required)
  2. Experience serving as Tribal general counsel or working closely with Tribal leadership
  3. Familiarity with Tribal governance, economic development, and federal Indian law frameworks
  4. Experience in litigation, transactional work, or regulatory matters affecting Tribes
  5. Cultural competency and ability to work effectively with diverse Tribal communities

Compensation & Benefits
