About Native Americans in Philanthropy
Native Americans in Philanthropy’s (NAP) mission is to promote equitable and effective philanthropy in Native communities. We do this by increasing engagement and funding to Native-led organizations; increasing and supporting Native professionals in philanthropy; and transforming and influencing the philanthropic sector to be in alignment with an Indigenous worldview. We also aim to improve the availability of regular, reliable data and Indigenous-led research on Native communities and their relation to philanthropy. NAP’s new strategic plan seeks to increase awareness among key constituents and engage Native and non-Native philanthropic professionals, Tribal Nations, and Native-led nonprofits with NAP’s resources, activities, and programs.
About the Position
Native Americans in Philanthropy's Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the organization, including budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, and contract management. This role ensures the financial health and integrity of the organization through strategic financial planning, monitoring, and collaboration with leadership and external partners. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical financial expertise, project management experience, and a commitment to nonprofit mission-driven work.
Primary Responsibilities
Financial Management & Oversight

Partner with outsourced accounting team to ensure all financial systems and transactions are recorded; review monthly financial statements; report abnormalities and trends to leadership

Regularly review financial dashboards and reports to assess cash flows and note deviations to VP of Administration and collaborate on taking corrective action to ensure proper operations

Monitor expenditures for the organization and issue contracts for activities to achieve goals and objectives established by leadership

Oversee all financial reporting and treasury functions, working with the VP of Admin, COO, Managing Director, and CEO

Ensure internal controls are properly maintained and updated regularly to address the organization's needs
Budgeting & Planning
-
Manage the annual budgeting process and guide Directors in the drafting and finalizing their budgets; provide ongoing budget support to departments

Work with external contractors on systems efficiency and effectiveness and evaluate needs for organizational wide software and upgrades to existing programs

Conduct financial forecasting and scenario planning to support strategic decision-making
Grant Financial Management

In collaboration with the Director of Development, prepare budgets and financial reports for grant proposals and reports, track regrants, and monitor spending on grants

Ensure compliance with all grant requirements and restrictions

Maintain accurate fund accounting across multiple grants and programs
Audit & Compliance

Assist financial accounting partner(s) with audit requests and preparation of the annual Form 990
-
Coordinate annual audit process and serve as primary organizational contact for auditors

Ensure timely and accurate filing of all required financial reports

Contract & Vendor Management
-
Negotiate contract renewals for administration including spaces, accounting, legal, and manage RFP processes in accordance with internal controls

Manage the purchase order process, including maintaining the Asana form
-
Evaluate and recommend vendors for financial and administrative services
Staff Support & Training

Serve as the point person for staff who need training and support on financial systems

Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures documentation, including draft and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Provide accessible financial information to support departmental decision-making
Accounts Payable & Receivable
-
Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable activities such as uploading vendor invoices, reviewing and coding bills and other expenses, review general ledger for corrections and adjustments in program and grant tagging

Oversee accounts receivable activities such as preparing and sending invoices and reviewing outstanding invoices and determining collection actions
Non-Essential Job Duties

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intacct or similar platforms)

Advanced skills in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel
-
Experience with financial reporting and dashboard tools

Familiarity with project management tools (Asana experience a plus)
-
Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities.
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Education and Experience
-
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance preferred; CPA designation a plus
-
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in nonprofit financial management
-
Demonstrated experience managing budgets of $5-10 million and asset management/treasury experience
-
Proven experience with grant accounting and compliance, including managing multiple restricted funds
-
Experience with annual audit processes and Form 990 preparation
-
Experience working with outsourced accounting firms or managing external financial partnerships
-
Track record of developing and implementing financial controls and procedures
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lead video conference calls and use computer equipment for extended periods of time.

Ability to travel up to 25% of the time for events, conferences, and staff meetings.
