Founded in 1983, NEO is a trusted intermediary linking philanthropic funders with grassroots organizations advancing social justice. Through collaborative grantmaking funds, fiscal sponsorship, and strategic partnerships, the organization moves resources to communities working on issues including immigration, voting rights, reproductive justice, racial justice, climate justice, and LGBTQ rights. With a projected FY26 operating budget of $175 million, offices in New York City, and a national team supporting more than 70 fiscally sponsored projects, NEO plays a vital role in strengthening the infrastructure behind transformative movements.

Following more than 25 years of leadership from its current president, NEO Philanthropy is preparing for its next chapter. The incoming President and CEO will guide the organization through a complex moment for progressive philanthropy while advancing a strategic plan focused on centering equity in philanthropy, connecting funders and changemakers, driving resources to the most impacted communities, and supporting emerging groups and leaders.
Key Responsibilities:
Vision and Strategy
- Set a compelling strategic vision that elevates NEO’s mission to resource movement leaders and advance transformative philanthropy.
- Align programs, operations, and financial resources through thoughtful strategic planning and disciplined decision-making.
- Partner closely with the board of directors to shape organizational priorities and ensure strong governance and strategic oversight.
Mission-Oriented Leadership
- Ensure NEO’s collaborative funds, fiscal sponsorship programs, and donor services remain innovative, impactful, and aligned with movement needs.
- Guide exploration of new initiatives, partnerships, and funding opportunities that strengthen movement infrastructure.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to both philanthropic partners and movement leaders, advancing the role of intermediaries in the social justice ecosystem.
External Relations
- Represent NEO as a prominent spokesperson and thought leader at the intersection of progressive philanthropy and movement building.
- Cultivate meaningful relationships with current and prospective funders to expand philanthropic resources for social justice movements.
- Build collaborative partnerships with peer intermediaries, sector leaders, and movement organizations to advance shared goals.
Operational and Organizational Excellence
- Lead, mentor, and support a high-performing executive team while fostering a collaborative, values-driven workplace culture.
- Provide oversight of organizational operations, including financial stewardship, compliance, and risk management.
- Ensure NEO has the infrastructure, systems, and internal practices needed to sustain growth and mission impact.
Experience, Skills, and Qualities
- Significant senior leadership experience in philanthropy, intermediary organizations, movement-support institutions, or related sectors
- Strong understanding of the philanthropic landscape and the evolving role of funders in movement ecosystems
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing racial, gender, and economic equity
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate complex trends into actionable plans and measurable outcomes
- Experience working across philanthropy and movement spaces, including navigating the dual roles of fundraising and advocacy
- Highly relational leader with strong communication skills and a compelling public presence
- Track record of successful senior-level fundraising and donor engagement
- Ability to convene diverse stakeholders and build coalitions across sectors
- Strong supervisory experience leading complex, matrixed teams
- Knowledge of nonprofit financial management, including budgeting and financial oversight
- Experience partnering effectively with boards of directors and supporting strong governance practices
- High emotional intelligence and the ability to foster a culture of transparency, collaboration, and shared accountability
Compensation
The board is targeting a salary of $400,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, a retirement fund with employer matching, and generous paid time off.
Working Location
NEO staff are located across the United States, with offices in Midtown Manhattan. This position is ideally based in New York City, though primarily remote candidates will be considered. Regular presence in New York City—at least twice per month—is expected. The role includes significant travel for partner engagement, fundraising, and conferences.
