POSITION OVERVIEW – WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Director of Tax, Audits, and Accounting is a senior finance leader owning the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of the Foundation’s accounting function, including transaction processing, financial close, financial statement preparation, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Operations and working closely with the Director of Finance, this role has responsibility for the full accounting function across a multi-entity environment, including a private foundation and a public charity.

This position oversees day-to-day accounting operations, leads the annual external audit and IRS Form 990 process, and serves as the Foundation’s internal expert on nonprofit accounting and tax compliance. Financial statements and accounting outputs produced by this role serve as the authoritative financial record used by the Director of Finance & Investments for budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and strategic financial analysis. The Director ensures strong internal controls, audit-ready financials, and timely, accurate reporting that supports governance responsibilities, strategic decision-making, and long-term sustainability.

The role combines hands-on operational responsibilities with senior-level partnership, requiring comfort moving between transaction-level detail and board-level reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting

  1. Lead and oversee the organization’s full accounting function and financial integrity across all entities, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial records.
  2. Responsible for historical financial accuracy and compliance, including general ledger management, financial close, preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements, audits, and tax filings.
  3. Oversee transaction-level accounting and processes to support audit readiness, tax filings, and internal reporting.
  4. Stabilize, document, and consistently apply accrual accounting policies, including revenue and expense recognition for prepaid, deferred, and accrued items.
  5. Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in a multi-entity, hybrid operating environment.
  6. Partner with programmatic and administrative teams to ensure appropriate financial classification, restricted fund management, and accurate reporting.

Audit, Tax, and Regulatory Compliance

  1. Lead the annual external audit as the primary point of contact for auditors; prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation; and manage findings and follow-up.
  2. Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of the IRS Form 990 and all required federal, state, and regulatory filings.
  3. Ensure continuous compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, tax regulations, and private foundation requirements.
  4. Monitor changes in nonprofit accounting guidance and tax law and assess implications for the Foundation.
  5. Maintain audit-ready financials year-round through disciplined close processes and documentation.

Financial Management, Cash Flow, and Investments

  1. Partner with the Director of Finance and Investments by maintaining short- and long-term cash flow forecasts to support IRS payout requirements, grantmaking, liquidity planning, and operational needs.
  2. Oversee revenue tracking and reconciliation across diverse funding streams, including grants, contracts, earned income, and other incoming funds.
  3. Reconcile investment activity, including capital calls, distributions, valuations, and realized/unrealized gains, in coordination with finance leadership and external partners.
  4. Support accurate financial reporting related to endowment and investment activity.

Systems, Process Improvement, and Cross-Functional Partnership

  1. Oversee and continuously improve financial systems and tools (e.g., accounting, AP, expense platforms), including documentation, testing, and staff training.
  2. Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen accuracy, efficiency, internal controls, and scalability.
  3. Prepare financial analyses, variance reporting, and materials for senior leadership and Board committees as needed.
  4. Serve as a trusted finance partner to leadership, balancing strong controls with a solutions-oriented, collaborative approach.
