Job Details

The Assistant Director of Development, Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Children’s reports to the Executive Director of Development, Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Children’s. This position is responsible for fundraising primarily for gifts of $25k-$99K for Duke Cancer and Duke Children’s and focuses on donors and prospects interested in these hallmark programs.   Work Performed: Serve as a member of the Cancer and Children’s fundraising teams and help donors see the relationship between patient care and the underlying science, research and education needs of these programs. Identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit special gifts prospects ($25k-99k); recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies for grateful patient prospects, event or special giving donors and partner with colleagues, administration, faculty and volunteers as appropriate. Pipeline development will be a key function of this role. A successful candidate will build partnerships with Duke Alumni and Engagement Development (DAED) and Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) major gifts colleagues to understand, articulate and align with departmental priorities.  Work in close coordination with leadership annual giving, major giving, and planned giving officers. Provide consistent referrals to leadership annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts colleagues. Secure gifts in support of funding priorities as established by Cancer and Children’s leadership, the dean and department chairs. Assist in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs, both on campus and regionally as needed. Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues on all Duke Health fundraising teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors. Identify and qualify prospects, develop and cultivate relationships, solicit special level gifts, and negotiate and successfully close gifts. When appropriate, and with appropriate partnerships, work on leadership annual giving pledges, major gifts and planned gifts.  Coordinate appropriate recognition and stewardship activities for donors. Travel locally, regionally, and nationally to qualify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward prospects and donors. Individual metrics will be set on an annual basis. Write or assist in drafting proposals and other materials as necessary.
Follow procedures in coordination with the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgement and follow-up on all private gifts from assigned donors. Develop contact reports and enter moves and data into tracking databases. Work successfully with colleagues across the institution to collaborate on prospects with multiple interests. Successfully maintain and manage an individual portfolio of prospects. Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.  

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES/SKILLS

Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with academic healthcare environments is highly desirable. Collaborative nature and willingness to travel and work evenings or weekends, as necessary.  
EDUCATION/TRAINING Work requires completion of a bachelor's degree program. EXPERIENCE Work requires five years experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fund raising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in general fundraising activities and proposal development.
