Organization Overview Founded in 2011 and based in Durham, North Carolina, Book Harvest (www.bookharvest.org) is a nonprofit organization that provides books to children and engages families and communities in promoting children's literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Book Harvest believes that books are essential to children's healthy development and well-being, that all children deserve to grow up in book-rich homes, and that all parents deserve access to the literacy resources and information that will enable them to be their children's first and best teachers and brain builders. To progress as a community organization and change the education landscape in positive ways, we at Book Harvest believe it is our responsibility to be actively anti-racist, and we are dedicated to continuing the fight against racism in our society so that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. To date, Book Harvest has provided nearly 2 million books and a wide array of literacy supports to children and families. Durham, North Carolina is our flagship location, and we are committed to the replication and expansion of our work throughout North Carolina and across our country. Position Overview The Associate Director of Development (ADD) will be responsible for managing fundraising strategy and realizing long-term fundraising goals for Book Harvest, a rapidly growing organization with a spirit of innovation and an annual budget in 2023 of $4.7 million. This is a new position for the organization, based in the External Relations Department. This is a hybrid position; in a typical week, approximately 40-50% of the work will take place at Book Harvest's office at 2501 University Drive in Durham, NC and/or in the community cultivating donors. Typical work hours span Monday-Friday but occasionally work hours include Saturdays and some evenings. The ADD reports to the Director of External Relations and, once onboarded, will be given supervisory responsibilities as the department undergoes further growth and development. The ADD's work to further the organization's strategy and goals includes but is not limited to the following: Donor Relations/Donor Cultivation (50%) Working with the CEO, the Director of External Relations, and others, oversee the continuous stewardship and cultivation of current and prospective individual and institutional donors. Ensure the timely and exhaustive pursuit of funding opportunities sufficient to meet the annual budget.
  • Draft and execute overall fundraising plan for raising annual operating income, increasing overall support, and diversifying revenue streams.
  • Develop and execute results-oriented annual spring appeal and end-of-year appeal campaigns.
  • Develop robust and professional sponsorship packages and increase sponsor prospects and revenue for the organization's signature annual Dream Big Book Drive and Community Celebration on MLK Day; develop a sponsorship giving pyramid to identify and cultivate high-value sponsor prospects to meet reasonable and ambitious sponsorship growth goals.
  • Work closely with the CEO and others to spearhead the development of a Major Gifts Campaign; a Corporate Sponsorship strategy; and a campaign to recruit new members to the Imprint Society, Book Harvest's planned giving program.
  • Working closely with CEO and Director of Strategic Partnerships, assist in the development and cultivation of new high-potential funding opportunities that contribute to the organization's goals for impact, scale, and policy influence.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the donor database system, ensuring efficient recording and acknowledgment of donors. (Note: this supervision will start with the Director of External Relations and may migrate to the Associate Director of Development once his/her/their onboarding is complete).
  • Working with the Director of External Relations and the Development Coordinator, conduct regular analysis of donor trends and opportunities as gleaned from the donor database system; use these data to construct philanthropic strategies that will result in success.
  • Partnering with Events and Development Manager, optimize monthly stakeholder events, including Visitors Programs geared to a wide variety of philanthropic partners and prospects.
  • Constantly build current and potential philanthropic relationships built on trust, and assist others in the organization to do the same.
Grant Writing (30%)
  • Research and write grant proposals and grant reports to optimally generate the revenues to meet Book Harvest's annual budget, tapping a wide range of funding streams including foundations, corporations, individual philanthropists, and government entities
    • Initiate inquiries to funders; draft narratives for grant proposals; review all contents of proposals for alignment and excellence prior to submission.
    • Support the production of required grant reports, and assist in identifying, evaluating, and reporting on program outcomes to funders in collaboration with Grants Manager and program-specific colleagues.
  • Working closely with staff colleagues, ensure that all known funding opportunities are comprehensively researched, pursued, and cultivated, with a focus on identifying new networks and contacts that can make a difference in realizing fundraising success.
Management/Strategy (20%)
  • Working with Grants Manager, maintain up-to-date calendar and work plans for all funding/development opportunities, including grant proposals and reports, mailings, and related marketing activities and events.
  • Working with the Director of External Relations, set and execute long-term strategic plans to achieve organizational financial goals. Plans should include benchmark milestones on financial results, relationship development goals, year-round engagement, and donor stewardship processes.
  • As part of a learning team, attend and participate in Book Harvest staff meetings, weekly one-on-one meetings with the Director of External Relations, and separate monthly meetings with programmatic staff involved in grants, with the Grants and Office Manager, the Development Coordinator, and with the External Relations Team, as well as other internal and external meetings as needed.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities as provided and recommended annually, in order to be poised to grow in the role as the organization and its development needs grow.
  • Contribute to department and organization culture of purposeful, mission-driven camaraderie and sustained efforts to improve inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging.

  • Superb grant writing skills and proven revenue acquisition success
  • Well-organized, with outstanding attention to detail and meticulous data entry skills
  • Comfort within a fast-paced environment and management of simultaneous projects where multiple priorities coexist simultaneously, ability to maintain and adhere to schedules that have strict deadlines
  • Ability to communicate objectives and goals in clear, concise, and compelling language
  • Team-oriented approach to work in which editorial suggestions, changes, revisions are met with collaborative spirit
  • Comfort with one's work being edited, sometimes multiple times as proposals are refined
  • Confident, self-motivated initiative to learn with an open approach to asking for help, anticipating problems, and course-correcting where needed
  • Utter dependability and a commitment to meeting and exceeding deadlines and honoring commitments
  • Strong capacity in Google Suite, especially Docs and Sheets. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint); willingness to learn Book Harvest's data systems (e.g. (Bloomerang, Neworg, Paylocity)
  • Understanding of and dedication to the mission and culture of Book Harvest, which includes cultural competence, demonstrated commitment to social justice and youth literacy, demonstrated capacity and enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration, and a commitment to active involvement in an anti-racist organizational culture
