Member Education Sessions: Tribal Tourism

1:00pm-2:30pm EST

Event Description

As stewards of the land, each Native Nation holds a unique responsibility to protect and give back to the Earth, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the undeniable beauty of our landscapes. This responsibility is especially important in the context of tourism, where a healthy hospitality industry plays a vital role in supporting the economic and cultural prosperity of Native communities. Although the history of tourism marks significant exploitation of both culture and land for profit, a shift is taking place, as more Tribal communities are reclaiming control over tourism and hospitality placing a renewed emphasis on preserving traditional values and promoting environmental sustainability.

Native Americans in Philanthropy is pleased to welcome Sherry Rupert, Chief Executive Officer of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association; Stacy LaCompte, Executive Director of the North Dakota Native Tourism Alliance, and Mālia Sanders, Executive Director of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association. Please join our panel of impressive Native professionals working to re-establish sustainable business models that prioritize cultural values and empower local economies.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Native Americans in Philanthropy welcomes you to engage in a gathering of nonprofits, philanthropy, emerging leaders, and Indigenous communities for discussions and collaborative action for building philanthropy rooted in Native traditions and values.

Our curated education sessions of virtual conversations, panels, and speakers represent the diversity of Indian Country, the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in America, and the allies that are working to support these communities. These sessions are designed for NAP members working in philanthropy and will focus on how philanthropy can operate differently to center Indigenous perspectives and values.

Through these sessions, NAP is passing the mic to individuals, Tribes, and Indigenous nonprofits who are experts in their respective fields. This intentional platform will foster an informed membership that will lead the shifting of the philanthropic sector in deeper, more impactful ways that serve the people, communities, and causes they care about.
