Member Education Sessions: Voting and Civil Rights

1:00pm-2:30pm EST

Event Description

The ability to vote is a fundamental part of democracy, giving each of us the power to shape our communities and the policies that impact our daily lives. For Indigenous Peoples, this right is even more profound since it was long denied to us. Despite decades of oppressive and exclusionary policies aimed at eroding our sovereignty, we have continued to thrive. Voting is not just a right, it is a powerful act of honoring the struggles our ancestors fought to have us recognized in our own homelands and to secure our future. It’s a way to ensure that our voices, past, present, and future are heard and respected. Voting is sovereignty in action, and our fight for civil rights extends well beyond the ballot box.

Join us on National Voter Registration Day for a compelling conversation as Dr. Cheryl Ann Karry (Standing Rock Sioux) of Sacred Pipe Resource Center and Ginny Underwood (Comanche) of Rock the Native Vote share their organizations’ grassroots efforts to Indigenize democracy. Meanwhile, Jacqueline De León (Isleta Pueblo) of Native American Rights Fund will present her vision for an equitable and just future rooted in Indigenous engagement and power.

ABOUT THE SERIES
Native Americans in Philanthropy welcomes you to engage in a gathering of nonprofits, philanthropy, emerging leaders, and Indigenous communities for discussions and collaborative action for building philanthropy rooted in Native traditions and values.

Our curated education sessions of virtual conversations, panels, and speakers represent the diversity of Indian Country, the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in America, and the allies that are working to support these communities. These sessions are designed for NAP members working in philanthropy and will focus on how philanthropy can operate differently to center Indigenous perspectives and values.

Through these sessions, NAP is passing the mic to individuals, Tribes, and Indigenous nonprofits who are experts in their respective fields. This intentional platform will foster an informed membership that will lead the shifting of the philanthropic sector in deeper, more impactful ways that serve the people, communities, and causes they care about.
