Vice President of Development | Handel and Haydn Society | Boston, MA (Hybrid) About the Handel and Haydn Society Boston’s Grammy-winning Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) performs Baroque and Classical music with a freshness, a vitality, and a creativity that inspires all ages. H+H has been captivating audiences for 208 consecutive seasons (the most of any performing arts organization in the United States), speaking to its singular success at converting new audiences to this extraordinary music, generation after generation. H+H performed Handel’s “Hallelujah” chorus in its first concert in 1815, gave the American premiere of the full Messiah in 1818, and ever since has been both a musical and a civic leader in the Boston community. During the Civil War, H+H gave numerous concerts in support of the Union Army (H+H member Julia Ward Howe wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) and, on January 1, 1863, H+H performed at the Grand Jubilee Concert celebrating the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Two years later, H+H performed at the memorial service for Abraham Lincoln. Today, H+H’s Orchestra and Chorus delight more than 50,000 listeners annually with a ten-week subscription series at Boston’s Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and other leading venues. Through the Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program, H+H supports seven youth choirs of singers in grades 2–12, and provides thousands of complimentary tickets to students and communities throughout Boston to ensure that the joy of music is accessible to all. H+H’s numerous free community concerts include an annual commemoration of the original 1863 Emancipation Proclamation concert on December 31 of every year, in collaboration with the Museum of African American History. H+H has released 15 CDs on the CORO label, performs regularly in New York and around New England, and tours nationally and internationally. In all these ways, H+H fulfills its mission to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul, and connect all of us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music. About Philanthropy at the Handel and Haydn Society With a $28M endowment and a $9M operating budget, H+H has grown significantly over the years and continues to expand with the leadership of the President/CEO and a strong philanthropic Board. Major gifts efforts built over the past 5 years have been a key priority for the. Additional sources of fundraising dollars include corporate and foundation giving, government grants, special events, direct mail, and online giving. In support of its mission and new strategic plan, H+H has begun to embark on an 8-figure comprehensive campaign that will: • Elevate H+H’s artistic quality and renown to new heights, • Engage a larger and broader audience in Boston, New England, and beyond, and • Propel sustained long-term achievement through strengthened financial resources • Through this campaign, H+H will connect a growing audience with the magic of H+H’s music, enhancing Boston’s stature as one of America’s most culturally rich communities. About the Position The Vice President of Development designs, coordinates, manages, and executes H+H's fundraising strategy and activities in alignment with the mission and strategic plan. The VP will lead the development program to meet the FY2024 fundraising goal of $6.5 million in the context of a five-year comprehensive campaign encompassing annual giving, strategic project funds, and endowment. The VP will also cultivate and steward a personal portfolio of approximately 40 major donors and prospects. The VP will lead a department of seven staff positions and manage an expense budget of $1.3 million. The VP will also work with consultants in key areas of support and work closely with the Board and related committees. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VP actively participates in organizational strategic planning and management. Key Responsibilities: • Create and implement fundraising strategy for H+H, aligned with strategic plan. • Lead H+H's comprehensive campaign to meet its multi-year goals. • Lead and inspire H+H's Development department to meet its annual goals, including major gift cultivation and stewardship, direct mail initiatives, board campaigns, special events, and strategies for corporate, foundation, and government proposals. • Manage budgets, aligning with strategic planning and implementation of development efforts and striving for high levels of motivation and commitment to H+H. • Solicit five to six-figure gifts from individual donors for general support and special initiatives each year • Guide the development team to strengthen donor tracking systems, including prospect management and research. • Advise the President/CEO on philanthropic activities and provide strategic advice on all aspects of CEO relationships with current and prospective donors, including the CEO's personal portfolio of 15-20 donors. • Manage the Development and Campaign Committees, providing regular progress reports on fundraising, donor activity, and recruitment of committee volunteers. • Support overall Board recruitment and development goals for H+H and advise the President/CEO on composition of Board committees. • As a member of the senior leadership team, actively participate in organizational strategic planning and management. • Cultivate relationships with other arts organizations, funders, public agencies, and educational institutions in Boston and beyond. • Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of H+H as directed by the President/CEO. • Advise the President/CEO on events that H+H should attend, and about other fundraisers and events that might further the mission and visibility of the organization in the community. • Attend concerts and functions, including performances and events in the evenings and on weekends, as required by the President/CEO and as necessary for donor cultivation and stewardship. Key Qualifications : • A Bachelor's or Master's degree is preferred, along with 10 years of demonstrated leadership-level fundraising experience and senior nonprofit management experience.
