Director of Development

Job Details

The core responsibilities of this position are to provide leadership to the department, its staff, and to support and execute annual fundraising and stewardship goals. This includes direct supervision of the Development Manager; working with marketing and communication contractors, service providers, and other partners; provide accurate reporting and data management; evaluate and execute the development plan; assist with Strategic Planning; and working collaboratively within and across all departments to ensure success of the mission within the organization. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director. 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Evaluates, design, implements, and manages annual Development Plan. Position specific focus on the Annual Fund, Major Gifts, Planned Giving, and key events.  

Measures Of Success    

  1. Works with department staff to achieve fundraising activities as outlined in the Plan, including but not limited to, annual giving, endowment, capital campaigns, and special projects. 
  2. Responsible for maintaining and managing Major Donor relationships, provide critical feedback, collaboration, and planning for fundraising activities. 
  3. Detailed reporting, tracking and notes are provided in accurate reporting structures (Bloomerang, 365, etc.) 
  4. Conducts training and orientations to staff and other key stakeholders on development-related topics. 

 

Fundraising and Stewardship; Works to retain, maintain, and cultivate relationships with all public and private donors.  

Measures Of Success  

  1. Collaborates with ED and Grant Writer to identify, cultivate, and maintain major donor relationships with individuals, grantors, and foundations.  
  2. Creates a working pipeline of donor/prospects in accordance with the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethics.  
  3. Arranges direct asks and makes solicitations.  
  4. Regularly evaluates donor base and donor relationships in line with principles of moves management, with particular attention to donor engagement, retention, and growth. 
  5. Seeks public speaking opportunities ED and self in promoting Paws and Stripes services, donor, and volunteer opportunities.  

 

Provides supervision to Development Manager to ensure their responsibilities are being met. Provide supportive and constructive feedback for improvement areas; evaluates efficacy of tasks areas.  

Measures of Success 

  1. Supervises and supports the responsibilities of the position, providing guidance, feedback, and evaluation for areas of work.  
  2. Maintains regular communication and documentation using 15Five.  
  3. Understands the role and tasks of the position to assist, when necessary, as well as their direct reports.  

 

Works with marketing and communications contractors, service providers, and other partners to meet the organizational communications plan and marketing goals. 

Measures Of Success  

  1. Delegates areas of responsibility to other department staff with contractors and providers; provides guidance and oversight.  
  2. Provides timely, accurate, and appropriate dissemination of marketing materials and copy as appropriate.  
  3. Maintains lines of communication and facilitates meetings as needed.  
  4. Utilizes a trauma informed approach when seeking to use and share clients’ stories; collaborates with Programs team to maintain expectations of privacy and safety. 
  5. Adheres to all branding standards in all external donor/prospect/sponsor communication. 

 

Reporting & Data Management; Development Planning and Board Relations  

Measures Of Success  

  1. Maintains and provides accurate, timely and detailed reports, as well as data management across all platforms used by the organization; works collaboratively within and across departments to ensure success of the mission within the organization.  
  2. Reports monthly development activities and attends board meetings as requested  
  3. Assists the board with recommending and researching potential new members.  
  4. Works with Committees and individual Board Members to cultivate Board participation in fundraising, advocacy, event planning, and in-kind solicitation efforts.  
  5. Understands and utilizes key donor management platforms and relevant sites for reporting, accounting, and tracking fundraising efforts.  
  6. Works with Executive Director to review, develop and execute annual development plan goals.  
  7. Collaborates across departments (Admin/Program) to support organizational activities and clear communication. 
  8. Collaborates with the Board of Directors, its Committees & the ED to implement the strategic plan. 

 

Other duties as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and/or three to five years of professional fundraising experience.
  • Adherence to highest ethical practices in fundraising & money management.
  • Demonstrated experience in direct asks resulting in major gifts and multi-year pledges, public relations, non-profit partnership, and donor cultivation, and/or related experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a leader and as part of a team.
  • Independent self-starter with positive problem-solver attitude.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Computer literate (Word, Publisher, Excel), able to learn & use Bloomerang donor management software. Familiar with data base entry and CRM maintenance.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, keep organized and demonstrate careful attention to detail.
  • Must like dogs and people.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a highly active environment with exposure to a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and diverse employee and client populations.
  • Required to use personal vehicle to travel to potential community partner locations, training, solicitations, or other community engagement activities.
  • May be required to handle dogs, with or without training, from time to time as needed.
  • Daily exposure to dogs in the office environment should be expected
  • Position may require the occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
