Position Description

The OrganizationMortenson Family Foundation builds partnerships to strengthen community-driven approaches that advance equity, opportunity, and sustainable systems.


Over the last two decades, the Foundation has consistently grown in charitable assets and now provides over $6 million in grants annually. Areas of greatest interest for the Foundation's giving include: 

  1. Increasing the standard of living for youth and families living in poverty in developing countries.
  2. Enable all Minnesotans to have equitable and sustainable access to healthy land and water.
  3. Expanding opportunities for youth and families living in poverty in the Twin Cities by supporting equitable access to academic and social development opportunities and systems.

Position summary: The Organizational Development Director serves as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and provides leadership and coordination across all areas of the organization. This role requires an individual with exceptional strategic, communication, organizational, and leadership skills. The Organizational Development Director will play a critical role in driving forward the mission and values of Mortenson Family Foundation while ensuring organizational efficiency and effectiveness.


Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Executive Effectiveness (30% of role)

  1. Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and foundation team to develop, organize, align, and implement strategic priorities that advance the Foundation's mission and outcomes. 
  2. Support the Executive Director with cultivating and maintaining strategic partnerships with external stakeholders, including nonprofit partners, peer funders, government agencies, and community organizations.
  3. Strategically manage Executive Director’s involvement in projects, meetings, and work processes.
  4. Research and analyze information to support the Executive Director’s decision making.
  5. Prepare for and follow up on meetings by ensuring the Executive Director and participants have all the information necessary to be productive and engaged.
  6. Create and/or coordinate agendas for the Executive Director approval before team, committee, and board meetings.

Organizational Effectiveness (50% of role)

  1. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability across the organization.
  2. Drive the strategic planning process, including setting goals and defining metrics for success.
  3. Establish and sustain systems to monitor progress towards achieving outcomes and Foundation impact. 
  4. Create and manage communications strategy and content development for internal and external communications, including newsletters, reports, pitch decks, speeches, and presentations.
  5. Support the Executive Director with staff members’ professional growth and development. 
  6. Support the Community Relationship Officers with development of convenings for grant partners.


Board Relations and Governance (20% of role)

  1. Partner with the Executive Director to facilitate communication and collaboration with the Board of Directors. 
  2. Support the Board of Directors in governance matters, including board meeting preparation, agenda development, and follow-up on action items.

While these are the primary duties, there is always the possibility of performing other duties as assigned.

  3. Ability to analyze and interpret data and leverage insights into critical decisions.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills that shape and express information and ideas.
  5. Passion for making positive, lasting change in community and interest in the Foundation’s areas of work.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills, including experience building relationships and working collaboratively in a team.
  7. Attends to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  8. Protects confidentiality of all information handled in the position; and exemplifies the highest level of loyalty, discretion, and integrity.
  9. Exemplifies flexibility and adaptability.
  10. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
  11. 8 years of experience in nonprofit management, with a proven track record of leadership and achievement.


The salary range for the full-time position is $125,000-$140,000 based on experience. Mortenson Family Foundation offers a comprehensive benefits plan including medical, dental, vision insurance; matches team member retirement contributions up to 4%; and paid time off. 


The Foundation is operating in a hybrid work model, honoring both work that can be done remotely and the requirement of in-person board, committee, network, and team meetings. Occasionally, the role may be required to adjust times to accommodate work and meeting schedules.
