Full-time, Exempt
FIRM/Non-Negotiable - $147,000.00 if based in Seattle Area, WA or $162,750.00 if based in in San Francisco, Bay Area
Candidate must live in the Puget Sound Area or San Francisco Bay Area to be eligible.
Magic Cabinet ("MC") is a philanthropic foundation that seeks to fundamentally redefine how philanthropy and nonprofits partner for sustainable and thriving communities. We’re looking for a passionate and experienced leader to build and direct a new team focused on philanthropic advising. This position will lead, plan, and implement philanthropic advising and delivery services with a focus on community-centered principles.
Magic Cabinet's Mission Magic Cabinet champions communities' work by partnering with nonprofits and other philanthropists to achieve the nonprofits' missions. We do this by providing long-term capacity-building grants, access to peer networks, and advocating for the broader adoption of collaborative, trust-based philanthropic practice.

Director of Philanthropic Advising responsibilities include:
Philanthropic Advising (30%)
- Refine and implement philanthropic advising offerings and systems;
- Build a portfolio of philanthropic advising partnerships by identifying and cultivating new and existing relationships;
- Develop strategies to move philanthropic clients up the ladder of engagement and commitment to community-centered practices;
- Cultivate and maintain open, transparent, and supportive relationships with philanthropic clients;
- Collaborate with Program, Research, and Advocacy teams to provide values-based support to funders, ranging from supporting the creation of customized grantmaking models to providing direct grantmaking services.
Documentation and Continuous Learning (10%)
- Develop and implement a system to document philanthropic client activities for internal management, learning, and iteration;
- Meet with philanthropic and foundation peers to understand individual needs and sector-wide opportunities.
Strategy and Execution (15%)
- Develop philanthropic advising team building upon previous work and learning;
- Attend select MC board meetings, retreats, donor and cultivation events as an ambassador of Magic Cabinet, its partners, and its values;
- Respond to varying and evolving needs and opportunities.
Leadership (20%)
- Partner closely with MC's leadership team to establish high-level strategy and internal communication and alignment;
- Participate in sharing and cross-team discussion of ongoing work, and internal team successes and failures;
- Work with members of the philanthropic advising team to help set individual and group goals.
External Relationships (15%)
- Meet regularly with external partners;
- Advocate for MC's unique approach to community-centered philanthropy;
- Help the team stay current on philanthropic trends through research and connections with experts in the field;
- Seek opportunities to learn from and share new grantmaking approaches and models;
- Work with MC peers to develop, host, and participate in regional events that support collaboration and networking among nonprofit, foundation, and philanthropic advising clients.
Administrative Duties (10%)
- Utilize computer and Internet-based software, including spreadsheets, presentation software, project management tools, video conferencing, survey administration, and collaborative documents
- Participate in internal meetings and training.
- Participate in self and peer-review processes.
- Participate in operational systems and procedures, such as expense tracking and documentation.
- All Magic Cabinet staff members are encouraged to participate in the betterment of Magic Cabinet’s procedures and processes.
You are well qualified if you have/are:
- At least ten years of experience in philanthropy and/or business development;
- A commitment to or curiosity for community-centered, innovative philanthropic approaches;
- Experience building and launching significant initiatives from the ground up;
- Demonstrated experience building and hiring new teams;
- A strong professional network in the philanthropic and/or venture capital sector;
- Excellent leadership, project management, and relationship-building skills;
- Experience working with high-net-worth individuals;
- Able to establish trust, communicate directly and clearly;
- A skilled collaborator who is comfortable working in groups and team-based settings;
- Comfortable presenting in front of groups and excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills; with a high degree of emotional intelligence;
- Able to develop, implement, and track/monitor budgets;
- The ability to commit to limited regional and domestic travel;
- Consulting experience is a plus.
