Development Director

Mosaic Remote $150,000-$200,000
Fundraising/Development Full Time

Job Details

ABOUT MOSAIC

Mosaic is a national funder and field catalyst, committed to creating a stronger, more impactful environmental movement by funding the field-wide shared tools and collaborative connections that equip organizations working for clear air and water, a safe climate, healthy and just communities for all, and thriving natural systems. With its innovative model of participatory grantmaking, we are committed to making transformative investments that build and support powerful coalitions, bringing in new voices, and scaling the shared tools that are essential to boost our collective power.

Launched in 2020, following a two-year decision process that engaged a diverse set of more than 100 stakeholders, Mosaic is led by a rotating Leadership Council of members from environmental, justice, and philanthropic organizations and supported by a small staff. With proposals from the field, the Mosaic makes grants to support field-wide capacity building through four key areas– narrative, leadership development, shared resources, and fostering relationships within the environmental and justice communities. In its first four years, Mosaic has invested $26 million toward movement infrastructure, benefiting over 5,700 organizations.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Impact is at the heart of Mosaic’s mission. As one of the only funders exclusively focused on building movement infrastructure—the connections and shared resources all movements need—Mosaic is committed to building the power necessary for lasting environmental and social change. A stable climate, clean air and water, healthy communities, and thriving natural systems all hang in the balance during this critical decade. Mosaic was created in response to a collective recognition that, although the U.S. environmental movement has achieved historic victories, the pace and scale of the challenge we face demand even more. The environmental movement will only achieve climate and environmental goals with a stronger, better-connected movement that is capable of driving and sustaining meaningful change.

ABOUT THE POSITION

As the first Development Director for Mosaic, you will work in close partnership with the Executive Director to shape and drive all fundraising efforts, manage existing relationships with key institutional donors, and build a pipeline of new supporters as we rapidly scale our grantmaking and deploy more funding to the field.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy & Relationships (50%)

Lead the development and execution of Mosaic’s fundraising strategy, enhancing visibility and building key relationships.

  • Create a development plan aligned with Mosaic’s mission, rallying staff and stakeholders around clear goals, and managing its execution to ensure targets are met.
  • Maintain and oversee a portfolio of high-capacity institutional donors, developing personalized engagement strategies for each.
  • Identify and research new fundraising prospects, including institutional and family foundations. Build strategic partnerships and make introductions to foster grantee and funder collaborations.
  • Implement a strategic approach to increase revenue, focusing on six, seven, and eight-figure gifts.
  • Align donor priorities with Mosaic’s core initiatives, building compelling cases for increased support.
  • Drive the generation of $8-10M annually, with growth targets for subsequent years.

Communications & Assets (25%)

Strengthen Mosaic’s messaging and outreach efforts, ensuring consistent and compelling communications.

  • Act as an effective representative of Mosaic’s mission to donors and external stakeholders. Serve as a primary point of contact for sources of philanthropic support as needed.
  •  Oversee the creation and submission of all grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with Mosaic staff and Leadership Council members on grant writing, fundraising communications, and external reports. Ensure Mosaic’s mission is effectively communicated through stories, anecdotes, and impact highlights.

Grant Management (25%)

Ensure proper management and reporting of all grants and funder relationships, and execute as needed.

  • Track grant deliverables, communication timelines, and reporting requirements.
  • Support and coordinate with staff and Leadership Council members to ensure timely delivery of grant-related commitments.

DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking collaborative candidates who are passionate about the environment. We strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of skills, experiences, and ideas to apply.

Candidates should possess many of the following qualifications:

  • Proven Fundraising Success: At least 7 years of experience in fundraising, with a history of securing and renewing six+ figure gifts.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to navigate donor relationships, address challenges, and strategically guide supporters toward increased giving.
  • Strategic Planning Expertise: Demonstrated experience in creating and executing creative and effective development strategies.
  • Exceptional Communication Skills: A skilled writer and storyteller, capable of engaging donors with compelling and vivid accounts of Mosaic’s initiatives with polished, donor-specific materials.
  • Deep Understanding of Environmental and Social Justice Issues: Familiarity with environmental and social justice issues, systems change, social movements, and movement building. Ability to connect these issues with donor interests and advocate effectively for sustainable, equitable solutions. Strategic analysis of the environmental, climate, and justice philanthropic community.
  • Hands-On Team Player: Willingness to roll up your sleeves and actively engage in day-to-day fundraising activities, from donor outreach to proposal writing, as a development team of one. Willing to pitch in where needed to achieve organizational goals.
  • Project Management Excellence: Proven ability to manage complex projects, set realistic goals, anticipate challenges, and diplomatically hold stakeholders accountable without direct lines of authority. Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Adaptability and Initiative: Self-starter who learns quickly and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Fundraising Databases: Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms is a plus.
  • Board Engagement: Experience collaborating with Boards of Directors is preferred.

Mosaic offers an excellent benefits package, which includes group health insurance, dental, vision benefits & disability insurance, FSA/Transit spending accounts, Employee Assistance Program, vacation time, paid holidays, and a 403(b) plan.
