TransitCenter is a private foundation that works to secure a more just and sustainable future with abundant public transportation options. To achieve our mission, and as we prepare to spend our endowment in the next 12 years, we need to build a movement working to transform how transportation is currently funded, and resources are spent.

The Opportunity

TransitCenter seeks an experienced and strategic leader to join its team as the Managing Director of Programs and Impact (MDPI). This position offers an opportunity to shape the future of TransitCenter by working closely with the Executive Director (ED) to drive strategy, oversee program teams and grantmaking, and ensure alignment with long-term organizational goals.

The MDPI will be responsible for leading day-to-day grantmaking operations, supervising program directors and managers, and fostering a high-performing, impact-driven culture. This is a leadership position focused on operational excellence, team collaboration, and building partnerships to strengthen the transit movement.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Overseeing all grantmaking to ensure strategic alignment and impact.
  2. Leading and supporting program teams, fostering collaboration across the organization.
  3. Developing and refining internal processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  4. Serving as a key advisor to the Executive Director and engaging with the Board.
  5. Building partnerships and external relationships to advance TransitCenter’s mission.

Ideal Candidate

Above all, the ideal candidate is a strategic and mission-driven leader who brings a deep commitment to public transit, social equity, and sustainability. They will be an effective manager and communicator, comfortable balancing high-level visioning with practical execution.

The MDPI will bring:

  1. 5–10 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, philanthropy, movement-building, or advocacy.
  2. A track record of leading program teams and overseeing grantmaking or strategic initiatives.
  3. Strong operational and financial management skills, including experience with budgeting.
  4. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage partners, funders, and stakeholders.
  5. A collaborative and adaptable leadership style, with a focus on results and impact.

How to Apply

The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $210,000, depending on experience. This is a remote role, with flexibility to work from anywhere in the U.S., pending approval. Staff are expected to work eight hours a day, with availability between 9 AM and 6 PM Eastern Standard Time. Travel may be up to 20%, depending on organizational needs.
