Job Details

Join us in telling California’s unsung stories and amplifying its unheard voices! We are an independent, nonprofit book and magazine publisher looking for a passionate, strategic, and innovative fundraiser to join our staff.

About us: Heyday was founded in 1974 in Berkeley, California. Through a quarterly publication, twenty new books per year, and a backlist of two hundred titles, we promote civic engagement and social justice, celebrate nature’s beauty, support California Indian cultural renewal, and explore the state’s rich history, culture, and influence.

About you: You are a self-directed, enthusiastic professional with experience working in fundraising. You are comfortable approaching program officers and people of capacity and inspiring them to donate; you have experience independently securing major donors and acquiring grant funding. You are organized and orient your efforts toward maximum effectiveness; you are flexible and creative in your approach to the shifting terrain of philanthropic opportunities. You are a strong and persuasive writer and storyteller, and you have a personal stake in our mission and community. You are attracted to the friendly, passionate, and purpose-driven atmosphere of a scrappy nonprofit. Experience with capital campaigns and California tribal communities a plus. We have flexibility about hours and in-office work; we prefer you work at least three days per week out of our Berkeley office.

About the position: This position is full-time and reports to the General Manager. There will be infrequent weekend and evening work around events. Health, dental, and vision benefits, along with access to a 401k included. Generous holiday, comp, and PTO policies. Salary range $70,000–$85,000, depending on experience. Starts immediately.

  1. Steward and track the organization’s fundraising activity from individual contributions, events, grants, and board giving.
  2. Help craft Heyday’s fundraising strategy and execute plans in close collaboration with the staff and the board of directors.
  3. Aid the Publisher’s efforts to cultivate major donors by teaming up for visits, tracking communications, identifying prospects, and processing gifts.
  4. Maintain existing foundation funding sources, keeping in touch with program officers, submitting grant applications, and following up with reporting; identify and approach foundations new to Heyday, especially in support of our California Indian publishing program.
  5. Supervise 50% of Marketing and Membership Associate position, overseeing our membership program and strategizing conversion to larger giving.
  6. Plan one fundraising event per year (our much-loved Heyday Harvest), plus other smaller cultivation and engagement events.
  7. Create seasonal direct-mail appeals, email campaigns, and year-end reports that inspire existing and prospective supporters.
  8. Process gifts, generate acknowledgment letters, and maintain data and archives.
