About the role: The Development Officer for Heart, Medicine, and Surgery is responsible for securing significant philanthropic support for the University of Minnesota and our M Health Fairview Hospitals and Clinics.This individual is responsible for developing a strong pipeline of philanthropic support for training, research, and clinical care, along with priority capital needs as identified across the assigned areas of the medical school and M Health Fairview service lines.  This position will also serve as a site liaison for our Clinics & Surgery Center and will lead fundraising efforts for the Red Heart Soiree, the signature annual benefit event for cardiovascular health. Philanthropic support focus is on developing a major gift pipeline primarily with grateful patients, individuals, foundations, corporations, and businesses. What you’ll do: Major Gifts
  • Develop and actively advance an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving performance metrics.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 150 major gifts ($50,000 and above) prospects. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.  Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts.
  • Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range from approximately $500,000 to $1 million. Works closely with prospect management and development leaders to set appropriate annual goals.
Volunteer Management
  • As needed, recruit, organize and work with volunteers in support of priority fundraising projects.
Organizational
  • Complete, file and maintain accurate, relevant and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals.
  • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate UMF Foundation procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution.
  • Attend University and external functions as recommended.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of three years professional development experience in individual giving, with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit and secure major gifts of $50,000 or more; or five or more years of experience in marketing, consultative sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with responsibility for cultivating/soliciting and maintaining long-term, trusting client relationships (either individual or business) for provision of services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
