Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP), in partnership with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, is working to strengthen relationships between Indigenous communities and community foundations.
In Fall 2023, NAP released a report titled Indigenous Centered, which examined the current state of engagement between community foundations and Native communities across the United States. The report outlined key opportunities for community foundations to enhance accountability and responsiveness to Native peoples.
This work culminated in the 2025 “Seeds of Connection” gathering, a regional convening held February 3–4, 2025, in Oklahoma City. The event brought together thirteen participants from eleven organizations, including Indigenous leaders and community foundation representatives from the Southwest, Southern Plains, and Southeast.
Over two days, participants engaged in place-based learning, facilitated dialogue, and collaborative activities designed to deepen relationships and foster shared understanding. Seeds of Connection provided a dedicated space to explore partnership models grounded in mutual respect, trust, and collective growth.
Building on this momentum, the project’s second year continues with a series of regional gatherings—small, place-based workshops organized in collaboration with Native communities in each region. Each workshop is expected to convene approximately 20 participants, including Tribal leaders, community leaders, and community foundation representatives.
The overarching goal of these gatherings is to facilitate deeper, more sustainable relationships between Native communities and the community foundation(s) in their area.
We are hosting three regional gatherings that are small, place-based workshops held in partnership with Native communities in each regional area.
Twenty participants, including Tribal leaders, community leaders, and community foundation representatives, will come together to engage in a two-day gathering featuring place-based learning tours, facilitated dialogues, and a variety of collaborative activities designed to foster engagement and shared understanding.

A comprehensive agenda will be shared with all participants as the gathering approaches.
Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP) promotes equitable and effective philanthropy in Native communities. We have more than a 30-year presence in the field and work closely with our counterpart organizations advocating for tribal communities. The cornerstone of our work is our relatives and our networks. We support several communities of stakeholders that work together to build knowledge, community, priorities, and power in the sector. These networks include Native professionals in philanthropy, elected Tribal leaders, Native youth leaders, Native philanthropic executives and board members, and Native nonprofit leaders.
We leverage the power and wisdom of these networks to:
Increase the authentic visibility of Native people and communities
Develop tools and resources to educate funders
Establish more meaningful and trusting relationships that align with our Indigenous values
Increase funding and accountability to Indigenous-led organizations, grassroots movements, and Tribal Nations
Over more than nine decades, the Mott Foundation has sought to advance and strengthen the well-being of all aspects of community — from individuals and families to the institutions that serve them. We continue to refine our work to reflect changing conditions in our hometown of Flint and communities around the world.
