Native Voices Rising Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honor and recognize the true complexity and full spectrum of Indigenous peoples, their histories, cultures, and present-day realities.

This year, President Biden issued a proclamation officially recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day, making him the first U.S. president to do so. This is a reflection of how the impact and contributions of Indigenous peoples can no longer be ignored, erased, or distorted. In that spirit, we celebrate Native Voices Rising (NVR), a collaborative created and led by Common Counsel Foundation and Native Americans in Philanthropy that supports organizing, advocacy, and civic engagement in American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.

Over the course of ten years, NVR has awarded over $3.5 million to more than 100 grant partners who are rooted in a Native community, led by Native people, and hold a vision for change that improves the lives of Native community members.

All-Native grant recommendation committees guide all funding decisions. NVR is proof of how institutional philanthropy can best support Native-led organizations with a philanthropic intervention that centers and lifts up the lived experiences of Native communities fighting for change in their communities.
