Native Americans in Philanthropy is dedicated to increasing and nurturing Indigenous representation in the philanthropic sector. With that in mind, the opportunities on our Job Board fit one of the following criteria:    

  1. The position is within a philanthropic or nonprofit organization 
  2. The position itself is philanthropic in nature and/or focuses on roles essential to or valued by the philanthropic sector i.e. fundraising, grantmaking, gift processing or development, donor relations, nonprofit management and/or administration, social justice, equity, conservation, etc.

POSITION OVERVIEW


Native Americans in Philanthropy seeks a dynamic and relationship driven leader to develop programs, partnerships, and opportunities that strengthen Indigenous leadership and increase Native representation across philanthropy, education, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, and community initiatives.


The Director of Indigenous Leadership Development and Community Engagement will build connections between Tribal Nations, Native organizations, students, emerging leaders, philanthropic partners, and community stakeholders. This position will focus on creating leadership pathways, mentorship opportunities, educational partnerships, and community engagement initiatives that empower Indigenous people to create meaningful change within their communities.


The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with experience in community engagement, program development, relationship building, leadership development, and advocacy. This individual understands the importance of Indigenous values, cultural knowledge, and community centered leadership and is committed to creating opportunities for future generations.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


Leadership Development


• Develop and coordinate Indigenous leadership initiatives for youth, students, emerging professionals, and community leaders.


• Support the creation of mentorship opportunities that connect Native youth and emerging leaders with experienced professionals and community leaders.


• Coordinate leadership workshops, trainings, and professional development opportunities that strengthen leadership skills and increase access to opportunities.


• Identify and promote scholarships, internships, fellowships, and career pathways that support Indigenous leadership growth.


Community Engagement


• Build meaningful relationships with Tribal Nations, Native organizations, educational institutions, foundations, and community partners.


• Facilitate engagement opportunities that encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing across Indigenous communities.


• Support community conversations focused on leadership, education, health, economic opportunity, and community well being.


• Represent Native Americans in Philanthropy at conferences, meetings, Tribal gatherings, and community events.


Partnership Development


• Develop partnerships with Tribal colleges, universities, schools, nonprofits, healthcare organizations, and community groups.


• Identify opportunities for collaboration that strengthen Indigenous leadership and expand community impact.


• Support the development of strategic initiatives that align with organizational goals and community priorities.


• Serve as a connector between Native communities and philanthropic organizations.


Program Coordination and Support


• Assist with planning, implementation, and evaluation of leadership programs and community initiatives.


• Track program outcomes and collect feedback to ensure continuous improvement.


• Support grant funded initiatives and partnership activities.


• Assist with identifying funding opportunities that advance Indigenous leadership and community development.


Communications and Advocacy


• Share stories of Indigenous leadership, innovation, and community success.


• Develop presentations, reports, and educational materials highlighting program impact.


• Promote increased Native representation in leadership positions throughout philanthropy and nonprofit sectors.


• Serve as an advocate for Indigenous voices, perspectives, and priorities.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


• Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree preferred.


• Experience working with Tribal Nations, Native organizations, educational institutions, healthcare systems, nonprofits, or community based organizations.


• Demonstrated leadership experience through employment, volunteer service, advisory boards, coaching, mentorship, or community involvement.


• Strong communication, relationship building, and collaboration skills.


• Experience coordinating projects, programs, events, or community initiatives.


• Understanding of Indigenous communities, Tribal sovereignty, and culturally responsive leadership practices.


• Ability to work independently while building strong partnerships across diverse communities.


FIRST YEAR GOALS


• Launch a Native Leadership Mentorship Network connecting Indigenous youth and emerging professionals with experienced leaders.


• Develop partnerships with Tribal colleges, universities, and Native serving organizations.


• Create leadership development workshops focused on communication, advocacy, relationship building, and professional growth.


• Expand opportunities for Native students and professionals to engage with philanthropy and nonprofit leadership.


• Increase awareness of Indigenous leadership success stories and create pathways for future leaders.


WHY THIS POSITION MATTERS


Native communities have always developed leaders through relationships, service, responsibility, and community engagement. The Director of Indigenous Leadership Development and Community Engagement will help strengthen those pathways by creating opportunities that empower Indigenous people to lead in their communities, organizations, and professions while honoring the values and traditions that have guided Indigenous leadership for generations.

• Increase Indigenous representation within philanthropy and nonprofit leadership.


• Build a sustainable leadership pipeline supporting future Indigenous changemakers.


POSITION PURPOSE


Native Americans in Philanthropy recognizes that strong Indigenous communities require strong Indigenous leadership. This position was created to build pathways for future leaders while strengthening connections between philanthropy, education, healthcare, community development, and Tribal Nations. Through strategic collaboration and relationship building, this role will help ensure Native voices continue to shape the future of philanthropy and community impact.
