About the Opportunity The Director of Principal Gifts will be responsible for driving and managing the strategic growth of principal gifts at NewYork-Presbyterian. Principal gifts represent NYP’s highest level donors at the seven and eight figure levels and will play a significant role in NYP’s multi-billion-dollar campaign that is currently in its early stages. Reporting to Suzanne Klein, Vice President, Development Frontline, the DPG will be a member of the senior development leadership team. The DPG will manage a growing team of Principal Gifts Officers and carry a portfolio of approximately 15-25 principal gift prospects. This position will also collaborate with the Senior Vice President & Chief Development Officer, Sheila Kelly, the President & CEO, Steven J. Corwin, MD, select Board Members and Physician Chairs on strategies and outreach for principal gift prospects. A primary responsibility will be strengthening the pipeline of principal gift level donors and prospects. This will include working with colleagues in major gifts and leadership gifts to identify and develop engagement and cultivation strategies for prospects with the potential to become principal gift donors. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Strategy • Work closely with the Senior Vice President & Chief Development Officer and the Vice President on strategy for a multi-billion-dollar campaign • Partner with senior leadership and Development leaders to develop fundraising plans for key priorities from conception through active fundraising • Work collaboratively and strategically to build the pipeline of principal gift level donors • Collaborate with the other frontline directors and the Vice President on creating and implementing strategies for the frontline fundraising program that drive aggressive growth, broaden the donor-base, and meet campaign goals • Collaborate with the VP on engaging with key service areas and service leaders to develop opportunities and evaluate and streamline efficiencies Management • Lead the principal gifts program and manage a team of principal gift officers, who are responsible for staffing NYP’s highest-level donors • Provide strategy, direction, support, motivation, and coordination to principal gift officers as they work to secure seven-and-eight-figure gifts • Report progress against strategic goals, including donor engagement and stewardship touchpoints, revenue targets, and pipeline development details Fundraising • Manage a portfolio of approximately 15-25 individual donors and prospects, primarily donors/prospects capable of making seven- and eight-figure gifts • Participate in gift solicitations with CEO, board members, NYP senior leadership, SVP, VP, physicians and direct reports • Work with NYP service-line leads, physicians, administrators, and internal communications team to craft proposals and reports to donor prospects • Meet with donors, provide stewardship, and convene donor tours and meetings Key Qualifications • 10+ years of progressively responsible fundraising and management experience • Personal record of successful principal gifts (seven- and eight-figure) solicitation and closure • Comprehensive capital campaign/principal gifts experience, preferably at a major academic or medical institution, in higher education, or other closely related field • Experience building and sustaining relationships among high net worth donors and prospects • Success supporting and managing institutional leadership in donor cultivation and solicitation • Superior interpersonal, management, and written and verbal communication skills • Ability to prioritize diverse tasks, function in a complex environment, and earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents • Strong ability to work proactively, establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve stated goals • Flexibility amidst the changing needs of the organization; demonstrated motivational and pragmatic consensus-building skills Leadership Competencies and Personal Traits • An engaged and energetic fundraiser, who relishes the cultivating, soliciting, and stewardship of donors • A person who can recognize and seize opportunities to advance an organization to a level it hasn’t reached before • A dynamic, “doer” leader with the ability to stimulate, invigorate, and motivate individuals around a cause • An executive who can develop and articulate the strategic plan for reaching goals, and manage a staff in achieving measureable results • A team player with senior management counterparts, who has collaborative instincts, an inclination to integrate efforts, and a tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty in a highly complex environment • A person with the presence and extraordinary interpersonal skills to build relationships at all levels around a passion for NYP’s mission Compensation The salary range for this position is $235,000 – $285,000; the successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined commensurate with experience, competencies, and skillset.
