Job Details

About Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

Founded by international hotelier Conrad N. Hilton in 1944, the Foundation invests in organizations tackling some of the world’s toughest challenges, helping people living in poverty and experiencing disadvantage. We think big about solutions, working in partnership with local communities to improve lives, strengthen systems, and bring meaningful change. The Foundation partners with organizations worldwide, with a special focus on Africa, South America, and the United States, including our home in Los Angeles. Additionally, the Foundation awards the world’s largest annual humanitarian prize for nonprofits — the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize. For 30 years, the Prize has recognized nonprofit organizations setting a global benchmark for excellence and advancing the collective progress of humanity. The Foundation is one of the world’s largest and has awarded grants to date totaling more than $4 billion, with nearly $353 million in 2025.

The Opportunity

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation is seeking a Strategy Officer to support strategy implementation and learning across the Foundation’s grantmaking programs. As part of the Strategy, Learning and Evaluation Division (SLED), the Strategy Officer will support the implementation of Strategy 2030, with a primary focus on the Early Childhood Development, Refugees, and Safe Water initiatives.

The Strategy Officer joins the Foundation at an important stage of this work, as initiative teams translate approved five-year strategies into implementation plans, assess progress and emerging evidence, and adapt their approaches as context evolves. The role offers a distinctive vantage point across multiple program areas and combines strategic problem-solving with the practical work of helping teams move from strategy to execution. In doing so, the Strategy Officer works close to the decisions that shape how a major philanthropic institution deploys its resources, helping teams use strategy, evidence, and learning to inform where and how capital can have the greatest impact.

Serving as an ongoing, engaged thought partner to assigned initiative teams, the Strategy Officer will work in close partnership with the Senior Strategy Officer, SLED Director, SLED Learning and Evaluation Officers (LEOs), and program teams. Rather than providing episodic strategic support, the Strategy Officer will maintain a continuous presence with assigned teams, asking incisive questions, surfacing assumptions, analyzing data, and helping teams translate evidence and learning into clear decisions and course corrections.

The Strategy Officer will facilitate team learning practices to ensure implementation is grounded in evidence, expertise, and leadership guidance. They will translate strategy progress, risks, and learning into clear, decision-ready materials for the Board and Program Committee. The Strategy Officer will also liaise with other departments to advance initiative strategies, including the Partnerships team, which develops the Foundation’s co-funding relationships and multi-stakeholder collaborations with peer funders, government, and the private sector.

The Strategy Officer will report to the Senior Strategy Officer within the Strategy, Learning and Evaluation Division.

Ideal Candidate

Conrad N. Hilton Foundation seeks an outcomes- and mission-driven professional who combines rigorous strategic thinking with a deeply collaborative and data-informed approach to problem-solving. A versatile generalist strategist, the ideal candidate is energized by moving across different issue areas and types of strategic questions, quickly building enough understanding to identify what matters most and determine the right analytical or facilitative approach for the problem at hand. They are skilled at helping others make better strategic decisions: bringing structure to ambiguity, asking incisive questions, synthesizing complex information, and translating analysis into practical guidance for implementation.

The Strategy Officer will be a skilled and adaptable thought partner who can work effectively across teams, disciplines, and levels of seniority. They bring a consultative and service-oriented approach to their work, recognizing that effective advising requires both responsiveness and judgment. They know how to tailor their approach to different audiences, facilitate productive discussions, build credibility with colleagues, and exercise the diplomacy and confidence required to constructively challenge assumptions and manage up when appropriate.

Highly curious and intellectually agile, the ideal candidate is comfortable working across a range of substantive issues and can get up to speed quickly in unfamiliar domains. They are confident analyzing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative information, spotting patterns and connections, and synthesizing complexity into clear, decision-oriented narratives, presentations, and recommendations.

The Strategy Officer is equally comfortable operating at the level of broad strategic questions and managing the details required to move work forward. They are self-directed, highly organized, and detail-oriented; able to manage multiple priorities and timelines; and comfortable shifting between analysis, facilitation, relationship management, and project execution. They approach the work with humility, pragmatism, strong listening skills, and an appreciation for the expertise that colleagues and partners bring to the table.
