Alaska Intersectional Philanthropic 2024 Tour

Native Americans in Philanthropy, Alaska Venture Fund and partners gained first-hand experience in the intersectional work being undertaken by Alaska Native communities in climate, conservation, green energy, language, culture, and community development.

Alaska is a critical piece of solving the global climate crisis. We also believe that Alaska Native tribes and nonprofits are developing some of the most innovative community development projects in the country, and that this work can serve as a model for Tribes and philanthropy everywhere.

The trip began in Anchorage where participants learned from our partners about the unique legal, political, and cultural history of Alaska Native peoples and then visited remote communities to learn how Tribes are implementing their visions. There are 229 federally recognized Tribes in Alaska. Not only are they tackling the disproportionate impacts of climate change via melting permafrost, salmon declines, increased threat of wildfire, but they are also building new language and culture programs, government institutions, narrative change efforts, and more.

Together, NAP and AVF organized this learning journey for philanthropic leaders to see Indigenous-led stewardship and self-determination work in action, gain an understanding of the global importance of this work, and discover ways in which this work can serve as a model for their grantees and Tribes in Alaska and in other regions.
